Engineering Basis & Compliance Standards
HVO Chemistry (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)
HVO is a paraffinic bio-based liquid fuel synthesized through hydrotreatment of waste lipids and used cooking oil. Unlike fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel, HVO is chemically identical to fossil diesel hydrocarbons (EN 15940 / ASTM D975), exhibiting superior cold filter plugging points (-20°C to -30°C) and zero gumming.
Burner Combustion & Atomization
Because HVO possesses high cetane (>70 vs ~45 for fossil #2) and slightly lower density (0.78 kg/L vs 0.84 kg/L), volumetric fuel flow increases by ~3%–4% to deliver equivalent thermal BTU input. Modern dual-fuel burners modulate smoothly with minor linkage/cam re-tuning.
Building Emissions Caps (LL97 / BERDO)
Municipal building decarbonization mandates (e.g. NYC Local Law 97, Boston BERDO, Maryland Building Energy Standards) impose severe financial penalties ($268/tonne CO2e over cap). Switching oil boilers to HVO avoids $500k+ in annual municipal penalty assessments while delaying multi-million-dollar electrification overhauls.
