The 6 Core Electrical Units Explained
The electrical potential difference pushing charge through a circuit. Think of voltage as the water pressure in a garden hose. Higher voltage reduces current (Amps) required for the same power, drastically lowering cable resistance and wire gauge costs.
The volume or rate of electrical charge flowing through a conductor per second. High amperage generates heat, requiring thicker copper wiring (e.g. 4/0 AWG for 12V 3000W inverters vs 4 AWG for 48V systems).
The real-time rate of energy consumption or generation. Calculated as Watts = Volts × Amps. An air conditioner pulling 1,200W requires an inverter capable of delivering at least 1,200W continuous output.
Energy consumed or produced over time (Watts × Hours). Running a 100W laptop charger for 5 hours uses 500 Watt-hours (0.5 kWh) of energy.
A measure of battery capacity at a specified voltage. A 100Ah 12V battery stores 1,200Wh, while a 100Ah 48V battery stores 4,800Wh (4x the usable energy).
The percentage of total battery capacity that can safely be extracted. Lead-acid batteries have a 50% DoD limit, whereas modern LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) delivers 80% to 95% DoD over 4,000+ cycles.
